A Root Canal is a treatment to repair and save a badly damaged or infected tooth.

Sometimes, when damage occurs to a tooth (often from a deep cavity or an injury that causes a tooth to crack), the inside of the tooth becomes infected. This infection damages the pulp of the tooth (the network of blood vessels and nerves inside). Left untreated, the damaged pulp can cause infection that will damage the bone around the tooth and cause swelling and pain.

A root canal treatment involves removing the damaged area of the tooth (the pulp), cleaning and disinfecting it and then filling and sealing it.

The common causes affecting the pulp are a cracked tooth, a deep cavity, repeated dental treatment to the tooth or trauma. The term “root canal” comes from cleaning of the canals inside the tooth’s root.
